Video calling software such as Skype is increasingly being used as part of the interview process – particularly when distance is involved. It might not seem that different to a face to face interview, but there are a few extra steps you should take before and during a video interview. Here are our key tips to ensure your interview is a success.
- Profile settings – Be aware of your username, email address and profile picture – you should make sure these settings are simple and professional. If you don’t wish to change the settings on your personal account, you could set up a new account for business purposes and provide these details to your employer.
- Surroundings – Check that your surroundings are suitable for the interview, clean neutral backgrounds work best. Ensure that the room is well-lit so that the interviewer will be able to see you clearly, and is quiet enough that they will be able to hear you.
- Resources – It is useful to have all of the key information you need to hand during the interview. This should include a copy of your CV and information on the company that you are interviewing for. It is best to have these documents printed out and on the desk, as looking at them on screen may distract you from the interview window.
- Dress – Dress for a video interview as you would a face-to-face interview, smart and professional.
- Timing – Be available on the video software 10-15 minutes before the arranged interview time. This will give you a chance to calm any nerves, re-familiarise yourself with the software and be ready and waiting for when your interviewer comes online.
During the interview
- Listening and communication – Listen carefully to the interviewer’s questions and use active listening cues such as nodding and smiling to indicate your understanding. Provide timely responses to questions and avoid long silences, but don’t rush your answers.
- Body language – Don’t forget to be as expressive as you would face to face. Maintain open, positive body language and facial expressions to help build rapport with your interviewer and show that you are enthusiastic about the opportunity.
- Technical glitches – If you encounter any technical issues, such as loss of sound or video, be honest with the interviewer, they will understand. You can minimise the risk of technical mishaps by running a few test calls with a friend to ensure you are familiar with the software and have a strong enough internet connection.
